Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal’s Substantial Contributions Help Sri Lanka Get Some Stability against New Zealand

dineshNew Delhi, Friday, December 11 – In the opening Test series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, the former scored 431 runs in their first innings, which came to an end on in 96.1 overs, while the latter scored 197 runs for the loss of 4 wickets.

After a firm start by the Kiwis on Day 1 of the match, New Zealand bowling lineup eyed quick wickets. Here is to mention that the opener Martin Guptill was the show stealer for playing a knock of 156 runs in 234 balls and hitting 21 boundaries in different areas of the ground.

Substantial contribution of 88 runs by Kane Williamson was of much use as well. Despite the fact that the batsman fell 12 runs short to get a ton but he made sure wickets are saved as long as possible. Almost similar job was done by the New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum as he played 75-run inning off 57 balls. The way he sent the ball into the fences 13 times and hit a six was truly spellbinding.

Tom Latham was dismissed at 22 runs, while Ross Taylor was sent back to the dressing room when batting at 8 runs. Dushmantha Chameera got wickets of both Mitchell Santner and  Bradley Watling at the scores of 12 and 5, respectively. Tim Southee lost his wicket post adding a couple of runs in the squad’s total score. Doug Bracewell resumed his batting at 32 runs today and who was out at 47 runs. Neil Wagner succumbed to Pradeep at 7 runs. Trent Boult was unbeaten at a zero.

Sri Lanka wanted a strong start in their first innings but failed in some context as Kusal Mendis did not succeed to read a delivery by Trent Boult and had to go back post scoring 8 runs, which comprised a boundary. Udara Jayasundera was out by Neil Wagner at a single. Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lankan captain, was caught by Bradley Watling when Tim Southee was brought into attack.  2 runs were pocketed by him in 10 balls. Dimuth Karunaratne, on the other hand, was impressive for playing a knock of 84 runs (4 x 7).

Dinesh Chandimal is batting at 83 runs, together with 9 4s, while Kithuruwan Vithanage at 10 uns. After 81 overs, Sri Lanka are batting at 197 runs. They wish to display good show from this spot for the reason that wickets are important to save at this stage to stop pressure from building. Most of the Sri Lankan batsmen who bat in the middle and lower order have the potential to hold the fort in tough situations. But it would be interesting to notice which player makes himself shine amid others at the moment when his team needs contribution the most. Three-day play yet remains. Sri Lanka need to be strong tomorrow to take lead. As of now, they trail by 234 runs.
