martinNew Delhi, Thursday, December 10 – Game 1 of the 2-match Test series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka caught the eyes as the two teams looked forward to winning it to get lead before the next contest starts.

It was a solid beginning by the Kiwis on Day 1 that made them acquire robust position in the match. Till stumps, New Zealand scored 409 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.

Martin Guptill, the opener, played a spellbinding knock of 156 runs off 234 balls, including 21 boundaries. Angelo Mathews dismissed him but much late. Before his wicket was earned, Tom Latham, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor were back into the pavilion post scoring 22 runs, 88 runs and 8 runs correspondingly.

Brendon McCullum, the skipper of New Zealand, was also out at 75 runs but his knock grabbed eyeballs and it came in just 57 balls, together with 13 4s and a six. Mitchell Santner and  Bradley Watling were out by Dushmantha Chameera at the scores of 12 and 5, respectively. Tim Southee is out at 2 runs. Doug Bracewell will resume batting at 32 while Neil Wagner at a zero tomorrow. Sri Lanka would want remaining two wickets to begin their first innings.
